Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday reiterated his demand that the Centre give its clearance for seven pending hydropower power projects of the state. He also sought that the Centre clear the proposal for the transfer of more than 12 hectares of forest land for the proposed sports university in Nainital.

Dhami, who has been camping in Delhi for the past two days, called upon Union Forest, Environment, and Climate Change (FECC) Minister Bhupender Yadav and reiterated his demand that the Centre support the state’s demand for early approval of seven hydropower projects that had been wanting for nearly four years. During his meeting with Yadav, the Chief Minister said, “Approval of development and construction of seven hydroelectric projects with a total capacity of 647 MW in Uttarakhand is important. Once commissioned, these hydropower power projects will help the state in various aspects and also contribute electricity to the Central pool as well.”

The Chief Minister assured Union Minister Yadav that the state was fully committed to ensuring a clean, unchecked flow of the respective rivers and protection of the Ganga ecosystem and its tributaries.

Besides the demand for early approval of seven hydropower projects, the Uttarakhand Chief Minister informed Yadav that his government has also proposed to set up a sports university in Haldwani in order to provide employment opportunities for the youths. For this, a proposal to transfer nearly 12.31 hectares of forest land in the Gauapar area to the state government was sent to the Union Forest, Environment, and Climate Change ministry, Dhami said, and he asked the Union Minister to direct the officials concerned to take necessary action on the land transfer proposal.”

The Union Minister expressed his in-principle consent and assured all possible support to Dhami’s demand for early clearance of hydropower projects and the land transfer proposal for setting up a sports university in Haldwani.
